The use of cold and heat whether or not in combination with compression, is widely the most used modality in sports. The ’20 minute’ rule is used as the default treatment duration for injuries while in performance recovery people use 10-15 minutes for immersion. However, recent studies tell us that this one-size-fits-all treatment limits the effectiveness of cold or heat application.

Many variables, like intensity, duration, depth of injury, individual characteristics, available application (etc.) determine the effectiveness of the use of cold and heat protocols. Therefore, it should be realized that no single default protocol exist that is suitable in all circumstances or for all athletes.
